Green Dot Public Schools Announces Application for Funding for After School Programs

We are excited to announce that this month, Green Dot Public Schools is applying for a grant from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program. This is a program which funds the development of community learning centers established by public schools, community-based organizations, and private schools.

The 21st CCLC has announced that it will provide $25 million to the state of California for the 2008-2009 school year to create opportunities for elementary and high school students to have after school tutoring and educational enrichment programs. If Green Dot recieves a grant, every Green Dot school will be able to offer after school tutoring to its students, along with enrichment programs like art classes, stronger athletic programs, and summer bridge programs.

We are thrilled about the possibility of winning this grant. Each school could win anywhere from $50,000 to $250,000 for these after school programs! We are working with strong community partners who offer unique experiences for students. For example, one of our partners, the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, will provide programs for Animo Watts 1 and 2, as well as all of the new Locke schools next year. Not only do they do academic assessments for each student to gauge what skills they need to work on and help them develop these skills, but they also offer arts enrichment classes like web design, glass blowing, and video production.

We will provide further information about the program once we recieve a decision about the funding!
