AVID Tutors (Locke)

Do you want to lead the effort to transform public education in Los Angeles and help ensure that all children receive the education they need to fulfill their dreams?

Green Dot Public Schools, the leading public schools operator in Los Angeles and an important catalyst for education reform in the State of California, is looking for three (3) AVID Tutors to help lead its efforts to generate excitement and awareness about transforming public schools throughout the City of Los Angeles. AVID is a college preparatory program designed to help "middle" students be successful in challenging classes, and eventually, in college. These positions will be based at our new Locke Launch to College Academy (LLCA).

A vital part of the AVID program is tutorials. The AVID tutor guides students as they work cooperatively in groups of five to seven students to help increase their understanding of material that is being covered in their core classes. Students bring questions from their classes that they need additional assistance with. In a group setting the students present their questions and help each other answer them by asking each other guiding questions. The tutor's role is to facilitate group participation, ask guiding questions, and grade student tutorials forms.  Additionally, tutors grade student binders, checking that they are kept organized and meet the AVID class requirements. Tutors will receive training.

The hourly rate for this position will be $12/hr.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Complete tutor training

  • Complete "at-home" training assignments
  • Complete "in-class" training
  • Attend "performance review" meetings to have supervisor provide feedback

2. Run tutorials groups (5-7 students per group)

  • Ask guiding questions to promote student thinking
  • Encourage all students to participate as co-investigators
  • Guide students toward resources to help them find solutions to their questions
  • Help students identify where their understanding of a question breaks down
  • Grade student tutorials forms
  • Have a strong knowledge of core high school academic subjects

3. Check student binders

  • Make sure students have all required components
  • Grade student binders against a rubric
  • Check Cornell Notes for completeness and quality

4. Be prompt and dependable

5. Commit to schedule your classes in such a way that will allow you to work the necessary hours for the entire school year (September through June).

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a full-time college student carrying at least 12 units.
  • Have strong desire to work with high school students.
  • Being a Locke High School AVID program graduate is desireable
